Basically what Ray said. For example, this is what happened in a race the other day:
I checked out and was apparently the only guy on soft tires. The soft tires have a bigger speed boost than the Gen 5's or any other cars which means you can storm out to a lead but they fade quicker obviously. Well I had a two second lead on softs and froze.
I restarted 10th with 20 to go and decided to risk taking softs again.I was the only one using them again and I went from tenth to first in three laps without much trouble (and no I didn't run over half the field

). It was actually a good choice for that track and i had a fast car and got out to around 8 car length lead before the guys on harder tires began closing in. By lap 18 Wheel and BW had caught me on their harder tires and my car was handling pretty terrible and Wheel bumped me out of the way to take the lead. He didn't mean to I don't think, he just had a lot faster car at the time and didn't realize how bad my tires were.
Another instance is when I had almost a two second lead at Knoxville 2k11 on soft tires and ended up finishing 6th lol. I was leading with 15 to go and tires just fell apart and I was getting passed about every lap by someone.
Generally the soft tires will buy you about 2-4 tenths a lap over the field for the first 40ish percent of a race, but then you even out for a lap or two before losing about that much or more a lap until the end of the race. If you stretch a lead out far enough and the guys behind you are battling then you may get lucky and win, which is what I was hoping for in those races. If the field gets single file though and consistent you'll probably be in trouble.
